Issue Position: Criminal Justice Reform

Issue Position

Lorraine has seen firsthand the impact of an overly punitive criminal justice system. She has witnessed the severe punishments that have been meted out for non-violent crimes and know these punishments have created a generation or more of absent fathers, dysfunctional families, and broken communities. That is why Criminal Justice Reform is a priority. Lorraine is committed to ensuring that we create a new criminal justice system that allows for rehabilitation, not revenge.

Such a system would attack the root of problems, such as addiction, rather than incarcerating its victims. It would support Dallas County efforts to reform the bail system, which currently punishes poverty more than it protects our community. And it would provide training and support for our hard-working law enforcement officers so that we can have a smart approach to crime that creates and supports safe communities. She will also push to prioritize and increase services to victims of domestic violence.

Finally, Lorraine will fight to ensure that incidents of police brutality are recognized and penalized. Having been a victim of police misconduct, Lorraine understands our community's mistrust of some law enforcement, and will work hard to improve those relationships.
